Photographing the stars
Scott Frances has been in Jennifer Anistons bedroom. But the movie stars boyfriend Justin Theroux neednt worry. Please ... Frances is an artiste.
See for yourself: The veteran lens man will kick off the opening of his exhibit, Monovision, at the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA) starting Wednesday. Why the name? When Frances was a boy he accidentally slammed his thumb in a door, cutting it severely. The shock made him look away from the injury, and he said after that he lost the ability to focus well in one eye, resulting in monovision. The condition has not affected his career (Ive taught myself how to create depth). The native New Yorker has shot the homes of various A-listers over the years for Architectural Digest. He chatted with us about some of his most memorable experiences.
Ted Turner: He was a total control freak. He counted every frame. He asked me how many shots I needed. I told him 90. After exactly 90, he said, OK thats it.
Jennifer Aniston: She is exactly what everyone thinks about her. An incredibly sweet and supportive and warm person. I shot her bachelorette pad in L.A. before she sold it. It was mid-century modernist, overlooking Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Striking views, tremendous, nice. She had the candles going. It seemed like a party house, with these huge verandas.
Robert Duvall: I photographed his house in Virginia, outside Washington, D.C. He is married to an Argentine woman [ Luciana Pedraza] and converted the top of a huge old barn into a tango dance floor to host tango parties. He was a very unusual, interesting character.
Woody Allen: I went to his townhouse on the Upper East Side where he was living with his wife Soon Yi and their three kids. Its on 71st Street, pretty much the best block in New York.
Jessica Lange: Oddly enough, she has a house! in Stil lwater, Minn., outside Minneapolis. She is from the area. She is really into gardening and had these amazing gardens.
Mariah Carey: It was a few years ago when she was kind of in that fragile state. She was a bit of a mess, but sweet, like a little girl. I went to her home in New York City and she had quite the posse around her. The weird thing was that she had the Prince of Chintz Mario Buatta do her place. The juxtaposition of this decor, Park Avenue old-lady doyenne meets young contemporary pop star, was just incredible.
